Strong is Beautiful

On Saturday, January 17th, Crossfit Human Laboratory hosted a huge fundraiser called the Southwest Fitness Throwdown. The event not only raised money for the March of Dimes, but also promoted athleticism and well-being in our city. The participants had to complete three Crossfit workouts in one day. The event hosted participants from Crossfit El Paso, Crossfit El Paso East, Crossfit Human Laboratory and Crossfit Get Lifted. The SWFT was an overall success and the athletes were so inspiring! I felt the need to share this with our blog readers because you can't be beautiful without being healthy! Also, I plan on competing in next year's event!

Our friends Jaclyn & Veronica (Veronica won 1st place in the women's division!)

Me and my friend Gabe, one of the contestants and 8th place qualifier in the men's division.

DJ Miguel Gamino was there to pump up the contestants!

An open letter from Fashion Delivers:

Dear Fashion Industry Leaders,
We are all now aware that disaster has struck in Haiti!

FASHION DELIVERS is coordinating efforts to send new product to our neighbors in Haiti who have been devastated by what very well be the worse natural disaster to have ever hit the western hemisphere. It has been reported that hundreds of thousands of people may have lost their lives and hundreds of thousands more have been left homeless and without life's most basic necessities.

Fashion Delivers is mobilizing to provide immediate assistance! We need a broad assortment of lightweight apparel for men and women, such as t-shirts, tops, shirts, jeans, shorts, slacks, sportswear, active wear, etc. Basic items such as underwear, socks, sheets (all sizes) and throws or lightweight blankets as well as baseball caps, sneakers, sandals and sleepwear are also needed.

Rest assured, your product donations of these essentials WILL reach the victims for which they are intended and will help them cope with this tragedy. This is a massive humanitarian crisis. Your donation of product will make the difference in so many peoples lives who have lost everything.

We anticipate starting to send product donations to Haiti by early next week. Please contact Fashion Delivers at 212-629-6700 or email carla@fashiondelivers.org for shipping information or any other questions you may have.

The answer to faulty commitment?

I may have run into the answer to many of our questions. Perhaps it's not the answer, but to me, it's something close enough to it. I've been meaning to share this with everyone for some time.

An excerpt taken from an article in Elle UK November 2009 called "Commitment & Men: The Truth."

MIT behavioral scientist performed this test.

"...The participants [men] all sat at computer screens then with each one showing three doors that they could click on. Each door delivered a different cash reward, paid out in real money, when you clicked on it, and each player had a total of 100 clicks. So the best course of action was obvious: quickly find the door that paid the biggest reward, then use up the rest of your clicks on it."

"...Ariely added a twist: if a player didnt click on a particular door...it began to shrink, before eventually vanishing. And thats when something strange started happening. People rushed to click on the shrinking doors to stop them [from] disappearing, even though they would make less money. It was a perfect demonstration of human irrationality in action. The only point of the game was to make as much cash as possible-and yet people were so panicked by the idea of losing one of the doors that they close to make less money, simply to maintain the feeling of keeping their options open."

Lobster Tales

A few weeks ago, Carl and I cooked a lobster and steak dinner. Correction...Carl and I cooked our very first live lobster dinner.

Armed with a recipe from LobsterHelp.com, a camera and big appetites, we trekked to our neighborhood market and purchased a very lively one-pound crustacean.

I wanted to give the little guy a name but Carl refused.

Upon returning home from the market, I mistakenly thought our lobster had died. Here he is springing back to life in our sink.

Boiling water, basil leaves, thyme and lots of lemon.

Carl dropping Lobsty in the pot.

Now we're cookin'

Carl's famous (practically rare) steak.

Ta-da!!
I know it may seem a bit cruel, but we had a great time cooking together and our meal was delicious. We enjoyed a starter salad, the lobster (and butter sauce), steak and a bit of fettucine pasta. Very filling...very tasty.

Jess’s 1st Shot at [real] Photography

I write for a magazine called Su Voz Latina (as my full-time job). Last month while at a photo shoot for our cover, our designer/photographer was pressed for time so I jumped in to help. I do enjoy taking photos but have never done so professionally. To my surprise, one of the photos I shot made the cover! This was such an honor! I didn't make any New Year's resolutions for 2010, but I am planning on developing my photography skills this year.
